PSA: Nook Tablet can be repartitioned in-store, Android app adds comic support

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012

Did you take umbrage with Barnes & Noble's efforts to hoard all your Nook Tablet storage for its own content? Well, the book seller has made good on its promise to reassign a portion of your 16GB hard drive, opening up 8GB for personal content and leaving 5.5GB for Nook Shop content. As we said before, you'll need to physically take your Nook Tablet to the bricks and mortar outlets to get the storage tweak. Readers that decided to go for other Android-laced tablets have also been gifted with a Nook app update, adding support for comics and related graphical literature -- just make sure that the slab is running Android 2.2 or higher.

Sweet Calvin & Hobbes tribute recreates Calvin’s deranged snowman torture [Video]

Saturday, December 17th, 2011

For many of us, the Calvin and Hobbes newspaper strip was a gateway drug to comics and fantasy pop culture in general. And there was nothing greater than all of Calvin's twisted snowman torture scenes. This video Christmas card plays homage to each of Calvin's snowpocalypses. Do you remember them all? More »

Scott Adams Is Bored [Gadgets]

Sunday, August 7th, 2011

Here's pretty much all I know about Scott Adams: Sometimes he says (or does) wacky things. Most of the time he draws funny comics about a luckless office drone named Dilbert. I can relate! But not today. More »

The Tech Support Call of Our Dreams [Comics]

There's a chick two phones over with a stuffed penguin doll and a poster of some bearded dude with swords. Tech support? Heck, I'd want to be transferred over to her for any call. More »

Special Ops Bunnies Are Watching You [Geek Fashion]

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

We have a weakness for The Oatmeal's comics around here, but we just discovered that he makes insanely adorable, rather geeky, and slightly creepy shirts. At least that's the only way I can sum up these fluffy-tailed spies. [The Oatmeal] More »

As a geek, there's little worse than watching on at the collective inefficiency that is the public using their computers. But their roundabout techniques really are a testament to mankind's adaptability in the face of adversity. [xkcd] More »

Kobo’s $149 eReader gets reviewed

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

So, how much e-book reader can $149 get you? Well, Kobo's eReader might not be heavy on the feature set, but based on the general impressions from Electronista's review, we'd say quite a bit. In exchange for dropping the 3G, WiFi, color screen and audio playback frills of the Kindle and Nook, Kobo's barebones device puts a pretty and intuitive face on simple book reading for a pretty lovable price. The biggest complaint hinges around some slow performance when closing and opening books, but with 100 pre-loaded titles and a fairly budget friendly online library, it seems like the device has you covered when it comes to actually reading things. We also covered Kobo in our iPad book and comics roundup, if more hardware isn't your thing.

A Bittersweet Valentine’s Day Card [Badvalentine]

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

Of all the xkcd comics, it's the Valentine's Day ones that are always my favorites. Even when they're bittersweet like this one.

You can click on the image for a closer look.

I suppose the lesson is to forget romance once science comes into the picture. [xkcd]

Bad Valentine is our own special take on the beauty—and awkwardness—of geek love.

Study finds people want more from their Kindles, less from their newspapers

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

This may come as a surprise to you (although probably not, you smart devil), but it turns out that plenty of people are dissatisfied with their current e-reader options -- according to a recent study conducted at the University of Georgia. The study was conducted over a six-month period where participants read the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on a Kindle, then provided feedback. The results were, well -- not entirely shocking. Younger adults found the Kindle to be lacking because it had no touchscreen or other applications (though to be fair, neither does the print version of the paper), while older adults seemed more satisfied, but also reported missing the crossword puzzles and comics of a real, live newspaper. Pretty much everyone agreed that the screen was nice and comfortable to read on, but almost no one was a fan of the price. All in all, there's not terribly much here that we think is overly telling -- besides (of course) the fact that paper rules.
