Wirefly selling HTC EVO 4G tomorrow via Facebook

Monday, August 30th, 2010

These days, trying to score an HTC EVO 4G is like trying to photograph a giant squid; you know that both exist, and it should technically be possible, but they are nearly impossible to find. Well, Wirefly has just dropped us a note to say that they have taken shipment of some EVOs and will be selling them tomorrow via Facebook. Here is the exact email we were just dealt:

Wirefly Reserving HTC EVOs for Facebook Fans!

Wirefly has received a cache of EVOs today! As you know, HTC Evos have been hard to come by online or in stores. Because of the huge demand for the amazingly hot superphone and the limited supply constraints, we are reserving this offer to our loyal Facebook fans.  Sometime tomorrow, we will announce the HTC EVO 4G sale on Facebook– at a very special Wirefly price.  To take advantage of this offer, customers must be a ‘fan’ of Wirefly.     Here is how it works:

  • Sometime tomorrow, Wirefly will announce the launch of the HTC EVO 4G sale on Facebook.
  • Wirefly will publish a link to purchase the Evo on the “Friends Only” tab of its Facebook page.
  • Non-fans will not will be able view or access the link.
  • Those not familiar with Facebook: To become a ‘fan’ of Wirefly, go to www.Facebook.com/Wirefly and click on the ‘LIKE’ button at the top of the page.

Reminder:  The EVO will not be available on Wirefly.com.  To access this limited-time offer, you must “Like” Wirefly’s Facebook page

So, if you don’t mind giving Wirefly a “Like” on the “Facebooks” you can afford yourself the opportunity to score an EVO 4G. Good luck and happy hunting.

Palm Pre hits 1.2GHz courtesy of SR71 Blackbird kernel, not for the faint-hearted

Monday, July 19th, 2010

Whoa! After breaking the 1GHz barrier just three weeks ago, dauntless modder unixpsycho is back with yet another insane hack for the aging Palm Pre. What's new? Why, this "SR71 Blackbird" custom kernel, which simply pushes the poor little OMAP3430 processor up to 1.2GHz -- that's twice the original clock speed, just so you know. As glamorous as it sounds, potential users are triple-warned about this mod potentially failing the webOS device in one way or another, despite the built-in speed-scaling mechanism to cap the device at 55 degrees Celsius (131 in Fahrenheit). And needless to say, don't expect your stock battery to hold up for more than a few blinks once implemented. Good luck, pilgrims.

Motorola Shadow slithers into Verizon’s inventory database as MB810

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

If the whole "smoke -> fire" adage proves true once more, it's looking like Verizon loyalists can expect to see a Shadow at least a few milliseconds before a CDMA iPhone. Following up on months of leaks and rumors, we've got yet another snippet of evidence pointing towards a VZW release of the so-called Motorola Shadow. Spotted here in the carrier's inventory database, the MB810 moniker aligns perfectly with that WiFi certification we saw earlier in the month. Combine that with the fact that this is definitely some sort of Motorola smartphone, and you've got everything you need to start pinching those pennies for a June / July debut. Oh, you already threw down a Benjamin for Memorial Day grub? Good luck with that return policy.

[Thanks, tuan tran]

Monday, May 17th, 2010

HTC-Droid-Incredible-13

We’re back with the final part of our 5 device giveaway series, and this time, we’re looking for a bonafide reason you need this phone. We want to know the current device you’re using, and why it’s so bad — maybe it’s half broken, barely works, is completely outdated, or any other reason — so, hit us up with some photo or video evidence and you could win yourself a Droid Incredible. Here are the official rules:

  • To enter, email a photo or video of your current busted handset to droid at boygeniusreport dot com.
  • If you decide to smash, break, destroy, or otherwise compromise the structural integrity of your phone, that’s on you.
  • This giveaway is open to anyone 18 years or older in the U.S. (it’s a Verizon CDMA device anyway)
  • We’ll run it until May 28th at 11:59PM!
  • Since we already gave out two devices, we have three left. That means there will be three winners in this contest.

Good luck!

Android 2.2 (Froyo) to allow USB tethering, Wi-Fi hotspot creation

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

Froyo_USB_Tether

This really is great news. TechCrunch is reporting that the next version of Android — version number 2.2, code name Froyo — will have USB tethering and Wi-Fi hotspot creation built in. Built. In. Currently, no information is available on if the new feature can and/or will be blocked by mobile carriers…but seriously, good luck to them if they try. Nicely played Google, nicely played indeed.

Mitsubishi to introduce preposterously large 149-inch OLED TV at ISE 2010

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Yeah, you can snag a TV larger than this, but good luck finding a 150-inch set with an OLED panel. In a presumed effort to quietly exert superiority over those "other guys," Mitsubishi is purportedly planning to unveil a 149-inch OLED TV at ISE 2010, which kicks off in earnest next week -- though, we have to say, we sure hope it's not one of those modular units that we saw at CEATEC. Unfortunately, the native resolution of just 1,088 x 640 is downright boring, but we're forcing ourselves to focus on the positives here. Essentially, something like this wouldn't have much use outside the world of digital signage, but man, talk about making an impact on to-be customers. So, Mitsu -- when's the 1080p 4K version coming out?

Halloween Costume Contest: Show Us The Geeky Getup You’ll Be Wearing This Year [Contest]

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

What are you going out as this Halloween? If it's geeky, we want to see it. There just might be a free pizza in it for you.

All you need to do is drop a photo in the comments of you actually wearing the costume. And let me just say, if it's Star Wars, it had dammed well better be unique somehow (like the Lego Star Wars costumes pictured above). And no, we don't need to see a pic of you as a kid in the '80's dressed like your favorite Ghostbuster—keep it recent. Show us a truly creative geeky costume and you could win that extra large pizza with toppings of your choosing. Better get on it as soon as you get home though—we'll be posting the best ones tomorrow. Good luck!
