Although Nokia hasn’t officially announced the C7 handset, we know it exists. We know it is going to run Symbian^3 and we know it is a full touch-screen device. Now, thanks to Chinese blog zol.com.cn we have some high-quality pictures of the device that reveal a few extra details. The images, which include a nip of Chivas Regal and a Las Vegas keychain, depict the GSM Nokia C7 with a 8 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, 1200 mAh battery, front-facing camera, 3.5 mm headphone jack, and micro-SD card slot. Alright guys, we finally have a BlackBerry Torch 9800 in hand, before launch date, and we figured we’d do the second honors on your behalf. We have chimed in with our first-hand impressions of the new BlackBerry, but now that we have a unit in front of us again, here are a couple more quick thoughts:
- Again, the device is really solid. Construction seems high quality, though there is obviously a “plastic” feel as opposed to something more luxurious. Like metal (aluminum, stainless steel). The rubberized back battery cover, while kind of scares me at first, feels really good when you hold the phone. It’s not overly rubbery, it is something that will probably save many Torch owners from flinging the device out of their palm while carrying it around.
- The screen is depressing. I personally think at this point in time, there is no excuse. It instantly makes the phone not feel competitive, and doesn’t encourage you to use the phone. In fact, it makes me not even want to use the device. Not sitting next an iPhone 4 and a DROID X — no way.
- Love the keyboard. I’m already able to bang out my 80 WPM emails (most likely ones yelling at Andrew).
- Will reserve full thoughts on the OS and UI for our review, but the phone really does feel a bit busy as I mentioned earlier. One of BlackBerry’s strengths has been providing users with that “always connected” feel, but I really think they might have taken it too far with the BlackBerry 6 OS.
While we put together the full review, we have to ask — who’s getting one, and who’s passing?

For reasons seemingly known only to Peter Chou himself, HTC has mostly steered clear of producing high-quality physical QWERTY devices running Android, despite the fact that there might be no phone manufacturer in the world more skilled at making them (let us remind you of the Touch Pro2, among many others dating back the better part of a decade). Anyhow, we caught wind last month of a possible entry in the form of the so-called "Vision," but we didn't have any visuals -- just a user agent profile that may or may not amount to anything. Well, that seems to be changing today with a couple blurry shots out of a Croatian site that allegedly shows the goods featuring a 3.7-inch display, a 1GHz processor (Snapdragon, we assume), and Android 2.1 with Sense (the launcher looks like stock Android in this photo, but the status bar is clearly HTC custom). At a glance, it doesn't seem to be the prettiest thing in the world -- but for a form factor traditionally associated with power users and suits, this might be just the ticket.
[Thanks, Ivan]

At a press conference on Tuesday, Google confirmed that by the end of the year, YouTube will give users the option to skip the pre-roll ads that launch before a video. The online video giant will also implement an ad selection feature that will allow users to select an ad that they find appealing prior to watching a longer-format video. YouTube will only pay for ads that have been watched, so advertisers that want a slice of the growing YouTube ad revenue will have to create compelling ads that users want to watch. Free video content with high quality commercials that are relevant to you — sounds like a good compromise.

Swedish startup Nocturnal Vision thinks their new dung beetle inspired algorithm can be integrated into cellphone cameras to allow people to capture high-quality video in low-light environments. They've already got Toyota investing in the algorithm for automobile night vision systems. More »

A job posting for a position within Lab126, a wholly owned subsidiary of Amazon that focuses on the Kindle, suggests that Amazon may be developing a new web browser for its popular e-reader. In an “it’s about time” maneuver, the job is seeking a Software Development Engineer to work with the web browser team on a project whose goal is to provide an innovative Embedded Web Browser. The current Kindle browser is severely lacking and needs an overhaul if the Kindle is going to compete with the iPad and other tablets slated to hit the market in 2010.
A recent report form ChangeWave Research is foreboding when it suggests that current e-reader owners would have bought an iPad if the iPad was on the market when they made their purchasing decision. Considering the market forces at play, the last line in the job description requiring “someone to deliver high quality work on tight schedules” is quite telling. Despite its calm and cool appearance, Amazon may be feeling a bit under the gun. What do you think?

Well, AT&T just finished up a call to discuss their earnings announced earlier today. The verdict on 3G performance its most heavily trafficked cities: still needs work! A lot of it. They even gave us a chart to prove it!
Apple executives described the system overload as a "high quality" problem, which from a business perspective may be so, but consumers may categorize it differently. The good news is that there's undeniable improvement over the last several months, particularly in Manhattan. The bad news is that we're still pretty far below AT&T's arbitrary "performance objective," which is still going to be somewhere below perfect.
AT&T expects "significant improvement" going forward, and they're increasing infrastructure spending by $2 billion to back it up. But until one in every fifty 3G calls stops getting blocked or dropped nationwide, I'm going to have to believe it when I see it.

We've long been fans of Oppo, makers of high-quality, universal Blu-ray players, but that quality always came at a price. Their new BDP-80, announced today, plays Blu-ray discs, DVDs, SACDs, MKVs, MP3s, and more for only $289.
The last we heard from Oppo, their BDP-83 was getting near-perfect reviews. The only problem was the price: $500. Now, you can bring a high performance Oppo player to your home theater for under $300.
The BDP-80 shaves off some of its more expensive older brother's higher end features, like 24p DVD conversion and in/out IR ports, but it still looks like it's a great option if you're looking for a high-quality, versatile BRD player. To check out a full comparison chart or place your order head to Oppo's site. [Oppo via Engadget]
