Apple TV becoming iTV, getting application support, yet losing full HD?

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

Engadget is following up on their previous story about an updated Apple TV set to hit the market as a $99 set top box, complete with iPhone 4 internals. Their new report details Apple’s supposed plans to rename the living room companion from Apple TV to iTV. It also sheds some more light on what everyone has rumored — iOS applications will, in some form, make an appearance on the device. Streaming iTunes services obviously look to be a lock, however, it’s not all downhill apparently. If Engadget’s sources are right, Apple’s newest set top box won’t be able to output full HD video. Not 1080p, not 1080i — just 720p. It’s inability is being blamed on the Apple A4 CPU, though the current iPhone 4 can handle that just fine. We’re looking at an announcement in “the Fall” though Apple’s September iPod event might be a nice occasion, don’t you think?

Apple adding email-based FaceTime calling soon, found in latest iPhone beta

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

You know how we reported on FaceTime probably linking up with emails instead of just phone numbers? It looks like it’s coming true, and possibly as soon as this month or next with Apple’s next iPod-focused event. There is a new option to initiative FaceTime calls from email addresses in the latest iPhone 4.1 beta 3. There’s a shot of the button above basically showing how simple this would be, in theory. No idea how Apple will plan to address multiple devices with the same email address, but we’re sure they’ll figure something out.

New iPhone Jailbreakme.com method allows for malicious phone access

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

If you haven’t heard by now, you probably don’t have an iPhone, but you can unlock your iDevice by visting www.jailbreakme.com. However, the exploit used to jailbreak iPhone, iPod and iPad devices is reportedly about to be turned against the hacking community, we’ve been told. Once the exploitation method is disclosed to the public, black hat hackers would be able to take advantage of it by setting up their own websites that could load malicious code onto your device. This is done through the jailbreakme PDF exploit. Under this method, it would be possible to possible to steal your address book, text message database, or much worse. There is going to be a security solution soon though, as BGR has been informed that a plugin named PDF Loading Warner” has been created to combat this potential security risk. It works by hooking into the device system and will display a warning before a PDF can be displayed. If you install this plugin and navigate to a website that should not be showing a PDF and get this warning, you are able to click “Cancel”, blocking the PDF from loading and subsequently stealing your data. It should be available from Cydia in the next day or two we hear, but more experienced users can grab the .deb file from the link below here and install it manually via SSH or iFile if they wish.

Note: This does not patch the exploit, but it will at least give you a bit of control.

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Dropcam Echo streams imagery to your iPhone, sends push notifications

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

Oh, sure -- you've got oodles of options when it comes to webcams, particularly the security types that are meant to monitor your home, garage or underground lair. But by and large, the ones already out there are difficult to install, pricey and impossible to troubleshoot. Dropcam's aiming to make things far simpler with its barebones Echo, which is the outfit's second-ever product. Essentially, it's a Dropcam (original) with audio support added in, and after you've got it mounted and streaming, you can sign up for a (partially paid) Dropcam.com service to access remote viewing via PC, iPhone, iPod touch or iPad (other devices are "coming soon"), and automatic alerts can be pushed to your iDevice whenever motion is detected. There's even the ability to review up to 30 days of footage on a timeline, and Dropcam makes it easy to generate video clips for permanent storage, too. It's on sale now for $279, representing an $80 premium over the video-only model.

Flash shown running on the iPhone

Monday, June 14th, 2010

comex-flash-iphone

Listen. We don’t have a whole lot of details to present to you, but what you see above is a still from a YouTube video that is said to be of an iPhone running Flash at full speed. Before anyone starts getting all huffy and cries out “FAAAKE!” so loud that they wake up their grandma, this video wasn’t filmed by some random yahoo. Oh, no (we think). It was filmed by Comex, the man behind the Spirit jailbreak for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. Other than that, we know that this hack is said to be”very preliminary.” Obviously we’re dying to know if it works as a standalone app or is able to fully integrated with the mobile version of Safari, but we guess something to look forward to is always nice, right? Hit the jump to check out the video evidence then let us know your thoughts.

Apple rolling iBooks out across iOS 4 devices, get your Winnie the Pooh now

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

No shock and awe here, Apple's already given us plenty of warnings, but we thought we'd drop you a friendly note to say that if you've upgraded to iOS 4 early, your copy of Winnie the Pooh is flying at you right this minute. Tipsters points out that they get a notification encouraging them to download the heretofore iPad-exclusive iBooks app, though they're finding they have to do it via their desktop iTunes client rather than over the air. Ah well, Apple's probably being extra cautious with moving those big wooden bookshelves into the smaller dimensions of your iPhone or iPod touch. We've not been able to get the app running on our iPhone 3G, so perhaps this is another of those features you're not going to be able to enjoy on older hardware -- we hope it's just us though.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

In case your memory needs to be jogged a bit, this $20 contraption promises to be ideal for "virtually any game," and let you use your iPhone or iPod touch in either portrait or landscape mode -- it'll also keep your headphones from getting tangled up for good measure. Motorola to replace Google’s Android location services with Skyhook Wireless

Monday, April 26th, 2010

skyhook-logo

Motorola is reportedly ditching Android’s built-in location services on much of its Android handset lineup and  replacing it with the location service code from Skyhook Wireless — a location services company out of Boston, MA. With its less than accurate positioning data, Google’s built-in system has been the bane of handset manufacturers and Android app developers alike. Rather than wait for Google to improve its location services, Motorola is turning to Skyhook, whose service uses a combination of Wi-Fi hotspot triangulation, cell tower triangulation, and GPS information to provide fast and accurate location information. With Skyhook on board, both built-in and third party apps like Twidroid, Yelp, and Foursquare will be able to report your location with pin-point accuracy. The technology is already in use by Apple in iPhones, iPads, iPod Touchs, and Mac OS X. Great news for all those stalkers location-based app users out there.

Rumor: Palm considering ditching Rubinstein

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

palm-logo

Take this with the usual grain of salt, but according to TechCrunch’s sources, Palm is about to undergo a huge shake-up and CEO John Rubinstein might just get the axe. Rubinstein became the CEO of Palm in October of 2007 after leaving his job with Apple as the senior VP of the iPod devision. The problem is that Rubinstein and his team have simply been unable to move its webOS devices ,with carriers practically giving them away and retailers turning their backs on them. With its debt mounting day by day and potential suitors dropping like flies, it seems to us Palm would be wise to lose some of its dead weight in an effort to make itself more attractive to buyers. You know, like maybe take on a CEO with a business degree?

Palm has not yet responded to calls for comments.

Apple rumored to be courting ARM Holdings

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Apple Logo-Black + White

ARM Holdings, the Cambridge-based company which holds the licensing rights to the majority of processors found in modern mobile devices, is said to be in Apple’s shopping list. Apple, purported to be ARM’s largest customer, pays the company royalties for each iPod and iPhone sold. An unnamed trader speculated to The Evening Standard that Apple would likely offer ARM 400p per share, or £5.2 billion ($8 billion USD). Shares in ARM Holdings closed Wednesday on the London Stock Exchange at 250.5p, up 3.09%. Last April, Apple acquired chipmaker PA Semi for $278 million. Earlier this month rumors began circulating that Apple had bought out the privately owned and Texas-based ARM design firm Intrinsity, a company which built its reputation a upon its energy efficient microprocessors. Many believe that Intrinsity’s acceleration technology plays a key role in the A4 processor found in the iPad. If Apple were to acquire ARM, there is every possibility it could fall victim to an anti-trust legislation as it would be in a position where it could exert undue influence upon its competition which also rely heavily upon ARM. One thing is for certain, almost every mobile device manufacturers is probably sweating at the thought of this actually happening…
