Today it was reported that a woman killed a man by squeezing his testicles. My immediate question was: can you die if someone squeezes your testicles hard enough? I asked Dr. Irwin Goldstein, urologist and San Diego Sexual Medicine's director. Here's the answer: More »

The FBI seems to be having a bit of trouble accessing electronic evidence lately. First there was the case of the forgotten encryption key, and now the Bureau is unable to prosecute a notorious San Diego pimp because they can't break his Android's screen lock. More »

Qualcomm this morning took the wraps off the fifth generation of its Gobi reference platform, which offers up LTE via FDD and TDD networks. It also plays nicely with past favorites, including the likes of HSPA+ and EV-DO, keeping your globe trotting self connected on that skinny laptop, tablet or convertible. The reference platform is designed to work with Windows 8 and Android devices and a number of processors, including, naturally, the San Diego-based company's own dual- and quad-core Snapdragons and good old x86. More information and lots of quotes from big name companies who think the bouncing new baby Gobi is just swell after the break.

We just met with Motorola in San Diego during the CTIA Enterprise & Applications 2011 trade show to get a first-hand look at the newly announced Motorola ATRIX 2, and we love what we see so far. The phone is made of plastic, and while we generally prefer more high-end materials such as aluminum, it feels weighty and solid in the hand. We also appreciate that Motorola added a dedicated camera button this time around, which makes it easy to launch the camera app for quick photo taking. The ATRIX 2 is also equipped with a beautiful 4.3-inch qHD display that was very sharp, a 1GHz dual-core processor, 8GB of storage, 1GB of RAM and support for AT&T’s HSPA+ 21 network. Additionally, it runs the latest Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) operating system. The ATRIX 2 will be available on Sunday, October 16th for $99.99 with a new two-year contract. We’ll reserve final judgements until we write our full review, but we’re definitely respecting the high-spec build-out at an affordable price point. Be sure to check out our gallery below.

3G wireless is now less a privilege than a right, and and with any luck our 4G networks will be similarly self-evident soon. Verizon is doing its part, flipping the switch on 28 new LTE markets today. This boosts the total number of covered areas to 102. Added highlights include: Colorado Springs, Colorado; Augusta, Georgia; Louisville, Kentucky; and Hilo, Hawaii. Meanwhile, folks in Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas, Dallas, San Antonio, and Seattle can now roam a little further from city center without losing LTE. The full list is after the break, but if you're feeling lucky just go ahead and enable everything on your handset. We've got our fingers crossed for you.

Look, we like the iPad just as much as the next person, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to go around licking it – in public, anyway. Raoul Martinez, a local Fox news anchor in San Diego, pulled off one of the funnier April Fool’s Day stunts we saw this year. Using an iPad app from Shock Top — the popular beer — Martinez managed to trick his co-anchor Shally Zomorodi into licking her iPad. Shock Top’s application promises that you can “smell” or “taste” the “satisfying flavor and aroma of Shock Top, a Belgian style wheat ale brewed with citrus peels and coriander spice.” Zomorodi fell for the prank — on air. Hit the jump for the video. Oh, and Shally, if you’re reading this, do the snozberries taste like snozberries?

Not one to be one-upped by Hertz -- which already announced a plug-in rental program that'll include the almighty Tesla Roadster and the diminutive Smart Fortwo -- Enterprise Rent-A-Car has just announced that it'll be the first to offer Chevrolet's Volt later in the month. The company's Mark Christopher Auto Center in Ontario, California will have an undisclosed amount in stock for daily and weekly rentals, and it sounds as if it'll be grappling for more just as soon as they roll off of the production line. For those who can't quite make it down to the desert, Enterprise will be offering 500 Nissan Leaf vehicles nationwide, with charging stations already installed in Los Angeles, San Diego and Santa Monica. No word on what type of fee you'll be hit with when you bring it back with only 20 percent of the batteries charged, but you can rest assured the bigwigs at Enterprise are already thinking about it.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to mock the above self-portrait without resorting to obvious jokes about the iPhone needing a bumper, the iPad lacking a camera of its own, or prefixing insults with the letter i. Come on, it's Christmas, let's be a little more like San Diego and keep it classy. For his part, David Polette, the author of this piece, admits to no Photoshop trickery whatsoever, having relied simply on his camera, Apple gadgets, and no small amount of patience to line things up just right. Android users, care to play along as well?
[Thanks, David]

Best Buy has already started selling some electric scooters and
motorcycles in its stores, and it's now about to expand even further into the EV business. The retailer has just announced a partnership with ECOtality, which will be providing Best Buy with some of its
Blink EV charging stations that will be installed at twelve stores in Tucson, Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Diego and Seattle by March of next year. That's being done as part of the government-funded EV Project that ECOtality is overseeing, and Best Buy says that it may install chargers at additional stores if the initial test phase proves to be successful. Full press release is after the break.

That Northwest Flight 188 San Diego to Minneapolis that went 150 miles off course? Well, it wasn't because of alcohol or sleeping. No, the cause here was the pilots using their personal laptops while talking about "airline crew flight scheduling procedure." As far as we can tell there was no in-flight WiFi, and it's a good thing, too -- no telling how far of they'd have been if the pilots had access to World of Warcraft.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]
