HP Envy 14 Spectre review

In a previous life, the HP Envy 14 was a laptop’s laptop: a 5.69-pound slugger with an optical drive, discrete AMD graphics and a battery that couldn’t last four hours in our battery rundown test. That notebook — one of our favorites in the 2010-2011 year — met its fate last fall when HP redesigned its high-end Envy line, but instead of going wherever it is gadgets go to die it was reincarnated as an Ultrabook. The new Envy 14, dubbed the Spectre, has shed almost two pounds, along with its discrete graphics and outmoded optical drive. It’s also one of the first 14-inch Ultrabooks to hit the market, but even if it weren’t so oddly sized we’d have no trouble remembering it: after all, how many laptops have a built-in NFC chip, or a glass palm rest?

There’s no doubt about it: the Spectre is a premium machine, and it’s not just that HP needed something high-end to take the place of the last-gen Envy 14. This also happens to be the company’s first consumer-grade Ultrabook, and it arrives at a time when there are many to choose from. Enter HP’s marketing department: the outfit’s touting this thing as a “premium Ultrabook” — the kind of machine you’d choose if you wanted a 1600 x 900 IPS-quality display or an unorthodox design. For that kind of beauty, though, you’re looking at $1,400 and up — a princely cost of entry when you consider lots of similarly specced models go for $1,100 or less. After $15.5 billion splurge on iPhone, Sprint may need $7 billion in new financing

In addition to the costs needed to upgrade its network to LTE by next year, Sprint said earlier this week that it is paying Apple $15.5 billion during the next four years for the iPhone. That huge cost means the carrier may need an additional $7 billion in financing to help boost liquidity, Reuters said on Thursday. Reportedly, Sprint is seeking $3 billion of the additional funds from vendor deals and an additional $4 billion in refinanced debt. “[The] iPhone has an expensive contract, but it is worth every penny,” Sprint CEO Dan Hesse said on a recent conference call in reference to the money it pays Apple on each iPhone phone. Sprint pays Apple a subsidy fee that is 40% larger than any other handset it sells, but the carrier also said the iPhone has been the fastest-selling handset it has ever launched. On Wednesday, Sprint said it was negotiating a new network sharing deal with Clearwire that would extend beyond 2012. Several analysts think Sprint may be trying to juggle too much at once, however. “They’re betting the house on two things at the same time,” Mizuho analyst Michael Nelson told Reuters. “If they pull it off, great. If they don’t, their financial performance would get materially worse, and they could have significant liquidity risks.”

Amazon’s $114 ad-supported Kindle is the best selling version

According to Amazon’s “Bestsellers in Electronics” list, the company’s $114 ad-subsidized “Kindle with Special Offers,” is the most popular model in the Kindle family of eReaders. The device — launched on April 13th — is just $25 cheaper than the $139 Kindle Wi-Fi version, but it comes with sponsored screen savers and advertisements on the bottom of the screen. We originally suspected that most people would splurge for the Wi-Fi version and avoid ads, but perhaps users aren’t as turned off to them as we thought. All of this only matters, of course, if the Bestsellers list is to be believed.

Amazon intros ad-subsidized ‘Kindle with Special Offers’ for $114

Amazon has announced that its customers can now purchase an ad-subsidized version of its Kindle. The “Kindle with Special Offers” eReader will retail for $114 and comes with sponsored screen savers and advertisements on the bottom of the screen. Buick, Procter & Gamble, Visa, and Amazon.com Reward Visa Card (Chase) will be the first companies to offer sponsored screen savers, and Kindle users can use a free “AdMash” Kindle application to choose what ads are displayed. Initial deals include:

  • $10 for $20 Amazon.com Gift Card
  • $6 for 6 Audible Books (normally $68)
  • $1 for an album in the Amazon MP3 Store (choose from over 1 million albums)
  • $10 for $30 of products in the Amazon Denim Shop or Amazon Swim Shop
  • Free $100 Amazon.com Gift Card when you get an Amazon Rewards Visa Card (normally $30)
  • Buy one of 30 Kindle bestsellers with your Visa card and get $10 Amazon.com credit
  • 50% off Roku Streaming Player (normally $99)

We’d probably splurge and buy the ad-free Kindle, which costs just $25 more, and think this deal would probably be more attractive if it was in the sub-$100 range. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 becomes everyone’s favorite midrange graphics card

It’s rare to come across a universally lauded product nowadays, but NVIDIA’s fresh new GTX 460 is just that sort of exceptional creation. Contrary to its GTX 465 elder brother, the 460 isn’t a chopped-down top-tier part and is instead built on the new GF104 core. This smaller core, designed from the start to perform humbler functions, has ameliorated the famed power inefficiency that has been a Fermi signature so far, and has resulted in AnandTech describing the new card as “the $200 king.” You’ll get 768MB of onboard RAM at that point, but we’d splurge an extra $30 to make that a round gigabyte and enjoy some extra L2 cache and ROPs on the card. Either way, the GTX 460 seems to have completely killed off the market for the 465 and is stepping all over ATI’s toes with its competitive pricing and, for once, decent heat and power metrics. For the anti-iPod crowd out there (you know who you are), Microsoft’s Zune HD has been a long time comin’. As of September 17th, your excuses for not owning one vanished completely, and for those diehards willing to splurge on Redmond’s swankest PMP yet, we know you’ve been toying with it ever since. Still, the Zune HD hasn’t thrived without its fair share of hangups, and we get the impression that at least a smattering of users are still frustrated by this or that. If we just rang your bell, you’re in the right place. We’re curious to hear what actual, honest-to-goodness Zune HD users have to say about their new toy, and better still, how you would’ve done things differently if you had any power whatsoever over Sir Ballmer.
