Samsung to introduce its Android tablet in Q3 2010

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Add Samsung to the long list of hardware manufacturers that are confirmed to be jumping on the Android tablet bandwagon in 2010. Samsung was not forthcoming with details but did confirm on Friday that its upcoming Android-powered tablet will sport a 7-inch display, placing it squarely in the middle of the 5-inch Dell Streak and the almost 10-inch Apple iPad. Looking to snag early adopters, Samsung is getting into the game slightly ahead of its local rival LG by launching its tablet in the third quarter of 2010. Anyone interested in a super-sized Galaxy S?

Acer comes clean with new Aspire One availability and pricing

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

We've pretty much known about all of these Acer netbooks that are officially being announced today, but their very tempting price tags are definitely new to us. First up is the 11.6-inch Aspire One 721 and 10.1-inch 521, both of which we checked out last month. While the duo are powered by the same AMD Athlon II Neo K125 processors and ATI Radeon HD 4225 graphics, the 721 will start at $429.99 while the 521 at $349.99. And let's not forget that, unlike Intel Atom powered netbooks, they sport HDMI ports and claim to be "HD capable." Speaking of Intel netbooks, Acer's got those in store too -- the 10-inch, Atom powered Aspire One D260 and 533 will also be available later this month. The D620 packs an Atom N450 processor, 1GB of RAM and a three-cell battery for $298. On the flip side, the $330 Aspire One 533 has a slightly faster N475 processor, a 250GB hard drive and a six-cell battery. Enticing, right? The full press release is after the break, but hopefully we'll be able to assist you in choosing one of these with some full reviews soon.

Microsoft KIN ONE and TWO available starting May 7th

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

kin-one-kin-two

Life streamers should mark their calendars for Friday, May 7th as Microsoft’s socially-driven KIN ONE and KIN TWO handsets are slated to make their official debut on Verizon Wireless. With its 5MP camera and diminutive design, the clamshell KIN ONE will be available for a reasonable $49.99 after a $100 mail in rebate and 2-year contract. With is 8MP camera and HD capability, the KIN TWO is the premium of the pair and will sport a slightly higher $99.99 price tag after a $100 mail in rebate and a 2-year deal. The KIN ONE and the KIN TWO can be activated on a Nationwide Talk plan and due to the presumed copious data consumption of upload hungry tweens, both will require a minimum data plan of $29.99 per month. If you listen closely enough, you can hear the collective gasp of penny-pinching parents around the nation.

Neofonie announces WePad 11.6-inch Android slate

Saturday, March 20th, 2010
Another day, another Android tablet render. This one, the imaginatively titled WePad, is as ambitious as its name might suggest. (You know, because "we" is plural of "I"? Yeah, it's a stretch.) Dwarfing the iPad with its 11.6-inch (1366 x 768) display, a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor, GMA 3150 graphics, webcam, two USB ports, flash card reader, UMTS modem, and a mooted six hours of battery life, we could see ourselves picking one up -- provided the price point is decent. But that's just the beginning! The manufacturer, Neofonie, also has designs on a WePad app store and, if all goes according to plan, this thing'll sport genuine Google Android and the Android Market. The company also mentions something called the "WeMagazine publishing ecosystem," the basis of a turn-key operation for getting your own branded device out on the e-reader market, so if you're looking to get into the biz just hit the source link to begin your adventure. As for us, we'll wait to see a final product before we jump to any conclusions.

Apple iPhone 4G to be taller than its predecessor, sport a larger display?

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

iphone-iresq-4g-parts

Like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, some claimed fourth generation iPhone parts have emerged from the corn fields business district of Olathe, Kansas. The supposed parts arrived at iResQ, an iPhone repair shop, and include a front panel which iResQ notes is 1/4 inch taller than the iPhone 3GS. This small increase in size could potentially translate into an iPhone with a 3.7 inch display, a size which is fast becoming the industry standard. The front panel also has a small reflective surface right above the earpiece that, no, is not a vanity mirror but may be a spot for the proximity sensor, a location that differs from the previous iPhone models. Bad news for those that are hard on their phone and tend to break not just the glass but the LCD panels underneath, as the LCD is reportedly glued to the digitizer and must be replaced together as an all-in-one unit. We don’t need to remind you that this dual-pieced part may cost a small arm and leg to replace. Last but not least, make sure your Martini glass is lined with a bit of salt as you’ll need those extra white granules while reading the unconfirmed contents of this post.

HTC Obsession to launch on AT&T and T-Mobile as the Diamond3?

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

htc-logoWindows Mobile 7 may be hitting AT&T and T-Mobile in the form of the HTC Diamond3, previously known as the Obsession. The Diamond3 will reportedly sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz processor, GSM/HSDPA connectivity, 3.7 inch capacitive AMOLED display with multi-touch, 5 megapixel camera with flash and HD video recording, 512MB RAM/512MB ROM, 4GB of internal storage, microSD expansion (up to 32GB) and a 1230mAh battery. The Obsession/Diamond3 is also going to be a GSM only device, no CDMA counterpart is in the works as sales of the last CDMA Diamond were sluggish. With HTC and LG rumored to be prepping Windows Mobile handsets for a mid-year launch, what are the odds that Windows Mobile 7 will be unveiled at MWC 2010?

In the U.K., Steve Jobs Is a Footballer [Steve Jobs]

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

As a soccer player living in a country slightly apathetic to the sport, I appreciate any mention of it that I can get. Even so, the geek in me wept a little at hearing this news out of the U.K.:

Steve Jobs: Soccer player?! A full 20% thought so, while 10% thought he was a turtleneck-wearing trade union leader. As for Bill Gates, he was one of the Great Train Robbers of the 1960s, according to 10% of survey respondents. There's video too, if your inner geek can handle it (although I swear some of these blokes don't have British accents...):

Twitter didn't fare much better (not that I really give a hoot about Twitter). What's going on in the U.K.? [CNET]

ASUS DR-570 e-reader to sport 6-inch OLED color screen, 122 hours of battery life

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

Well, isn't this a doozy. ASUS was a bit of a no-show in the e-reader arena at CES, but has dropped some knowledge on the Times Online's InGear: it's building a 6-inch color OLED e-reader, which flies in the face of previous rumors about an ASUS e-reader entry. The device, currently dubbed the DR-570 and pictured to the left, will play back Flash video, includes WiFi and 3G, and supposedly can last for 122 hours on one charge under "real world conditions." It's supposed to be released by the end of the year, and while from anybody else we'd assume this would cost an arm and a leg, the ASUS brand gives us some hope that we might actually be able to afford one when it hits.

[Thanks, Ian S.]

Sony’s VAIO Bluetooth Laser Mouse pictured in the wild, almost as ugly as last week’s OpenOfficeMouse

Sony's VAIO Bluetooth Laser Mouse pictured in the wild, almost as ugly as last week's OpenOfficeMouse

While it may not sport the same egregious number of buttons and blue and white aesthetics as last week's affront to ergonomics, Sony's VGP-BMS80 VAIO Bluetooth Laser Mouse certainly doesn't offer much better looks. It does, however, allow for wireless control of either a PC or a PS3 and, with an optical sensor on top, can be used in the air like a trackpad or on a flat surface like a mouse -- a place where that "bar of soap" design will surely not do your carpal tunnels any favors. It's available now at various internet destinations and, if you're still interested, about $80 will get you into this party.

Managed Copy hits Blu-ray Discs December 4th, but you still can’t use it

Saturday, November 7th, 2009
Managed Copy demo

The egg had to come before the chicken right? Well either way, one of 'em came first and in the case of the latest Blu-ray feature, Managed Copy enabled Blu-ray Discs will come before the hardware. Less than five months since AACS was finalized and the details of Managed Copy were revealed and so far we've only seen one demo and not a single product announcement. This doesn't surprise us, but AACS-LA is apparently surprised because although all Blu-ray Discs sold after December 4th have no choice but to allow at least one copy to be made, the requirement to label the packaging as such has been postponed until Spring of next year. We'd expect at least a few products that support Managed Copy to be announced at CES and although we highly doubt any stand-alone Blu-ray players will sport this feature anytime soon, we do have our hopes on PC software and expect a few movie jukebox devices like Kaleidescape -- that we won't be able to afford -- will be announced at the big show in Vegas.

Motorola’s Zeppelin spotted, found to contain Android rather than hydrogen

Motorola's Zepplin spotted, found to contain Android rather than Hydrogen

Last week's blurry little roadmap from Motorola gave us our first glimpse of the codename Zeppelin, and now just a few days later the thing has floated its way into the hands of someone at DIGI.QQ.com, a person kind enough to take pictures of the side, back, and inside -- despite skipped the all important full-frontal shot. This Android-powered handset is said to sport a five megapixel camera with flash, WiFi, a 3.1-inch 480 x 320 screen, HDMI output, and, a first for Android, dual SIM slots for for GSM and CDMA support. Rumor has it release will come first in China, sometime in the first quarter of next year, with worldwide shipments sometime later. Sure, that's a long time to wait if your contract expiration is nigh, but we hear that Droid thing is pretty neat.
