Deutsche Telekom tests 512Gbps fiber optic network in Germany, breaks record in the process

Monday, March 5th, 2012

If you thought Google’s Kansan stab at blistering gigabit speeds was lust-worthy, then this latest fiber feat out of Germany should have you flooding the room with drool. Part of Deutsche Telekom’s OSIRIS (Optically Supported UP Router Interfaces) project, the telco’s T-Labs team managed to successfully transfer data “over a single optical fiber wavelength channel” from Berlin to Hanover and back at speeds of up to 512Gbps — that’s over half a terabit. It’s hard to imagine just what exactly you’d be able to do with all that bandwidth (upload your entire music and video library, perhaps?), but this real-world experiment should go a long way towards helping operators shore up increasing network demands, going so far as doubling their backhaul capacity. As for any actual implementation of the next-gen tech, well, the good news is that a costly and lengthy cable deployment won’t be necessary; all that’s required to get these state-of-the-art dumb pipes up and running is some newfangled terminal equipment. Don’t hold your breath, though, as with all things bleeding edge, this tech is still light years away from your mitts.

Amazon Prime Instant Video expands its library with even more video from PBS

Friday, October 21st, 2011

PBS has been down with Amazon’s Prime Instant Video service since it launched, and now it’s providing even more all-you-can-eat video for streaming under an expanded agreement. Naturally that means lots of episodes of NOVA and Antiques Roadshow, and “for the first time on digital video”, 200 episodes of The French Chef with Julia Child. According to Amazon, that puts its total number of selections over 12,000, more than double the amount of content it launched with. It still has a ways to go to match Netflix, but with a lower yearly price, sweet shipping deal and now the ability to teach you how to make an omelet Amazon’s developed a very compelling alternative.

XBMC teases new features coming in 11.0 ‘Eden’ release

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

The next version of XBMC isn’t ready for prime time yet, but the team behind it is already talking about what’s being added and tweaked in v11.0, a.k.a Eden. This is the first major release since the media player app added iPad, iPhone and Apple TV support and as such improved touchscreen support is high on the list. We can also expect a new “Files” view in the video library, a different default skin, improved CPU / GPU efficiency, customizable home screens and other UI tweaks as seen above. Now that the list of features is pretty much locked down we’ll be expecting a beta, and eventually final release, but you can hit the source link to dive in early and help test everything out.

Sanho announces new HyperDrive line-up, still enough storage for your Frank Zappa discography

Sunday, January 30th, 2011

Surely you remember Sanho’s HyperDrive lineup — ya know, the only portable HDD that plays nicely with the iPad? Well, if you don’t dig the $249 entry level price, you’re in luck. The company just announced a bunch of new HDDs for you to take with you and your iPad on that road trip you’ve had planned for years. The new drives no longer sport the QVGA color display or the CF and SD card slots — instead, the black case has two mini USB ports and a power socket. The HyperDrive doesn’t come with the traditional AC adapter but instead a USB-to-DC cable and the user-replaceable battery will allow up to 40GB of transfers on a single charge. And if you’re wondering why there’s two USB ports, we really couldn’t tell you. Perhaps if you choose the right port while connected to your PC and enter the Konami code, unicorns and fairy dust will pop out of your screen — wishful thinking, we know. The HyperDrives ship in March (pre-ordering is available now) with prices starting at $99 for a bring-your-own-drive housing, 1TB for $349 and various sizes in-between. So, if your photo/video library is worth accessing at all times, well, props to you. Press release is after the break.

HTC announces five Windows Phone 7 devices, sprinkled around the globe

Monday, October 11th, 2010

HTC said that it was going to make Windows Phone 7 a major part of its device lineup… and they weren’t kidding. The manufacturer has just announced five devices, in various flavors, that will be available around the globe in the near future. As HTC writes:

HTC 7 Surround

Whether it be gaming, movies or music, HTC 7 Surround is the ultimate multimedia device. With a unique slide-out speaker and integrated kickstand with integrated Dolby Mobile™ and SRS WOW HD™, the HTC 7 Surround delivers high-fidelity audio and virtual surround sound that enable people to share their favorite music and videos with their friends in style. No longer are they forced to use headphones for a great surround sound experience because the HTC 7 Surround speaker makes the listening experience natural and comfortable.

HTC 7 Mozart

Crafted from a single piece of anodized aluminum, the HTC 7 Mozart feels great in the hand and takes HTC’s unibody design aesthetic to the next level.  The slim, solid and smart HTC 7 Mozart sounds as good as it looks and integrates Dolby Mobile™ and SRS WOW HD™ for high-fidelity, virtual surround sound.  With Microsoft Zune integration, people can synchronize the HTC 7 Mozart with their PC, enabling them to take their music and video library with them wherever they go.

HTC 7 Trophy

HTC 7 Trophy harnesses the power of Xbox LIVE. Gamers will enjoy the speed and responsiveness of fast action gameplay supported by the phone’s high-performance 1GHz Snapdragon processor, and controlled through the vivid WVGA 3.8″ touchscreen.  High-fidelity, virtual surround sound – through SRS WOW HD™ – brings a rich audio experience whether the user is playing a game, watching a video or listening to their favorite music.

HTC 7 Pro

The development of the HTC 7 Pro was inspired by power users who want to combine the ultimate in business efficiency with the ability to take full advantage of their leisure time. The sleek handset slides opens and tilts to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard for fast, comfortable typing, while productivity features such as the ability to sort, scan and manage Outlook email, open and edit the latest Office documents on the phone and keep track of the markets with HTC’s stocks application, offer new ways to maximize the business day.

HTC HD7

HTC HD7 owners can enjoy their favorite videos and movies in cinematic-style thanks to the large 4.3″ high-resolution screen, while its kickstand allows them to sit back and enjoy the action handsfree. For those who refuse to compromise on their mobile gaming experience, the HTC HD7 realizes the power of Xbox LIVE, bringing gameplay to life in a way that takes console gaming beyond the home.
